Marguerite of Austria, also known as Margarita de Parma after her marriage to Octavio Farnesio, Duke of Parma -of whose union was born Alejandro Farnesio-, was one of the daughters that Emperor Charles V had out of his marriage with Empress Isabel of Portugal . Not in vain, was born on July 5th, 1522 and was the result of his relationship with Johanna Maria van der Gheynst, daughter of a Flemish aristocrat, and who became his mistress for a short period of time.
Now, what is her relationship with Ortona? In this Italian villa he died in 1586, after receiving permission from King Philip II to return to Italy. That is why Ortona remeber her figure once a year in a historical representation that deserves to be highlighted.
Specifically, it is a historical recreation -which this year celebrates its second edition- in which the Cultural Association Giovani Ortonesi participates in collaboration with the Commune of Ortona and the Historical Group ‘I Farnese’. A unique opportunity to enjoy a procession that runs through the historic center of Ortona, and includes a cortege consisting of flag bearers, musicians, soldiers and falcon flight show.
