Memory Commission 500 years Patronato Panamá Viejo

An extraordinary opportunity to learn how and in what way the 500th anniversary of the founding of Panama City has been celebrated

Three years to celebrate an event as significant as a fifth centenary. The founding of City of Panama. The result is a memory that you already have at your disposal, and whose content we summarize in the following lines.

In 2019 the fifth centenary of the foundation of City of Panama was commemorated. A special event. For this reason, three years ago, in 2016, a cultural plan was launched with the purpose of establishing the strategic lines of development of a program to commemorate this event.

Far away is that September 25th, 1513, when Vasco Núñez de Balboa sighted the Pacific Ocean. After that, the Crown of Spain decided to found the city of Panama on the coast of that unknown sea. The purpose was clear: to discover and colonize the territories surrounding it.

Thus, on August 15, 1519, Pedro Arias Dávila founded City of Panama, which meant sowing the seed of the globalization process that both the city in particular and the country as a whole are experiencing today.

A celebration that has been an extraordinary opportunity for the enhancement of an archaeological site in the middle of the city. But also the renewal of historical knowledge and the revitalization of a common space for the imagination of the local Panamanian.

A whole programme of cultural activities, exhibitions and archaeological research that can be reviewed in an extensive memory, whose aim is to make the origin of City of Panama, its history and life better known, in order to understand its history and appreciate the importance it had both for the country’s history, in particular, and that of the Americas in general.
