It’s celebrated every time September 6th falls is Sunday
The Guadalupan Holy Year began on August 2nd. But where does this celebration come from? We tell you in the following lines.
There are different ways to earn the jubilee. In our network of routes you can get it in Guadalupe. Since 2005, every time that the 6th of September (day of the patron saint of Extremadura) is celebrated on a Sunday, the Guadalupense Holy Year takes place.
An appointment that happens with the following cadence: 6-5-6-11 years. In total, fourteen times during a century.
Now, you are probably wondering: but isn’t Extremadura Day celebrated on September 8, the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe? True, but the liturgical feast is celebrated 48 hours earlier, on the 6th, as determined by Pope Pius X when he proclaimed her patron saint of Extremadura in 1908.
How to win the Jubilee
There are several ways to earn your jubilee if that’s your intention. The first is to arrive at the Basilica of Guadalupe by the different roads that exist to get there; the second is to pray some Prayer and ask for the Pope’s intentions; and the third is to receive the Sacraments of Penance (it can be a fortnight before or after) and Communion. It is also recommended to hear Mass.
In all, a year, from September 2020 to September 2021, full of religious and cultural activities that makes Guadalupe a place to be enjoyed day after day. These activities are managed by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, and we will inform you about the calendar soon.
A celebration to be enjoyed for a whole year; and with the possibility of earning your jubilee if you wish.
Are you up for it?
